The Sacred Temples of Pithapuram

Pithapuram is not one temple — it is an entire sacred landscape. Each temple here carries a distinct divine presence that has drawn pilgrims for thousands of years. Here is what awaits you on our temple tours.

Kukkuteswara Swamy Temple

The Sri Kukkuteswara Swamy Temple is the presiding Shiva temple of Pithapuram and the primary Bhairava deity of the Puruhutika Shaktipeeth. Built in the Chalukyan architectural style, this ancient temple enshrines a self-manifested (swayambhu) Shivalingam that is believed to have been worshipped since before recorded history. The name "Kukkuteswara" — the lord who takes the form of a rooster (kukkuta) — reflects an ancient legend in which Lord Shiva appeared in this form to protect the sacred kshetra.

Darshan at this temple is the auspicious starting point for all ritual pilgrims at Pithapuram. The temple is open from 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Special abhishekam and archana services are available. The temple is managed by the Andhra Pradesh Endowments Department. Photography is restricted inside the sanctum sanctorum.

Shri Puruhutika Devi — 10th Shakti Peetha

Shri Puruhutika Devi is one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas and the 10th among the 51 Shakti Peethas enumerated in the Tantric texts. According to the Devi Bhagavata Purana, the left hand of Goddess Sati fell at this sacred location when Lord Vishnu dismembered her body with the Sudarshana Chakra to release Lord Shiva from grief. The presiding Goddess here is called Puruhutika — a form of Mahashakti who is also known as Rajarajeshwari in this kshetra.

Visiting Puruhutika Devi on our temple tours is especially significant for families performing ancestral rituals, as the combined energy of the Shakti Peetha and Vishnu Pada at Pithapuram is said to create an unparalleled spiritual field for Pitru Moksha. The temple is open from 5:30 AM to 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Navaratri celebrations here draw devotees from across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Sripada Srivallabha Mahasamstanam

Sripada Srivallabha (1320–1351 CE) is revered as the first complete avatar of Lord Dattatreya in the Kali Yuga. Born in Pithapuram to the devout Brahmin couple Appalaraja Sharma and Sumati Maharani, He displayed miraculous powers from childhood and attracted disciples from across India. His life and miracles are documented in the sacred text Sripada Srivallabha Charitamrutam.

The Mahasamstanam at His birthplace in Pithapuram is a major pilgrimage destination for Dattatreya devotees, particularly those from Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka. The complex includes the birthplace shrine, a meditation hall, and a prasad distribution centre. Darshan is available from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The Guru Purnima and Dattatreya Jayanti celebrations here are extraordinary events.

Pada Gaya Sarovar — The Sacred Tank

The Pada Gaya Sarovar (also called the Bhima Kund) is the most sacred body of water in Pithapuram. According to the Skanda Purana's Bhima Kandam, this is the precise location where the divine feet (pada) of Gayasura rested when the Holy Trinity performed the cosmic Yagna on his body. Lord Vishnu's paduka (divine footprint) is enshrined here.

Pinda Pradanam and Tarpanam performed at the banks of the Pada Gaya Sarovar are considered supremely efficacious because of the direct divine imprint at this location. The water of the sarovar is used in all ancestral rituals performed at Padagaya. Our tour packages include time at the Sarovar for Tarpanam or silent meditation. Early morning is the best time to visit — arrive by 6:00 AM to experience the powerful spiritual atmosphere at sunrise.

Kunti Madhava Temple

The Kunti Madhava Temple in Pithapuram enshrines Lord Vishnu in His form as worshipped by Kunti Devi — the mother of the Pandavas. According to local Puranic tradition, Kunti Devi performed penance here and prayed to Lord Vishnu for the welfare of her sons. The deity's idol is considered extremely ancient — some estimates place its origin in the early mediaeval period.

The temple is particularly significant for mothers praying for the welfare of their children and for families seeking Lord Vishnu's blessings alongside their Pitru karma rituals. The combination of Vishnu darshan at Kunti Madhava and ancestral offerings at Pada Gaya Sarovar is considered a complete ritual circuit in the Pithapuram tradition.

Dattatreya Temple & Padagaya Kshetram Complex

The Dattatreya Temple within the Padagaya Kshetram complex is the active ritual site for Pinda Pradanam and all ancestral rites performed by Padagaya priests. Lord Dattatreya — the divine form that combines Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva — is the presiding deity of this ritual space, and His presence is invoked at the commencement of every ancestral ceremony.

The Kshetram complex houses the puja sala where rituals are performed, the samagri store where offerings are prepared, and a rest area for pilgrim families. The complex is accessible from 5:00 AM to 7:00 PM. All Padagaya ritual bookings include access to this complex and the services of our registered Vedic priests.
