Your Complete Guide to Sightseeing Near Pithapuram

Pithapuram sits at the heart of one of Andhra Pradesh's most naturally beautiful regions. After completing your ancestral rituals, take time to experience the pristine coastline, rich wildlife, and serene landscapes that surround this sacred town.

Uppada Beach — The Silk Weavers' Coastline

Uppada Beach is one of Andhra Pradesh's most pristine and least crowded beaches, located approximately 20 kilometres from Pithapuram. Unlike the commercialised beaches of Vizag, Uppada remains beautifully unspoiled — a long stretch of golden sand backed by casuarina groves, with the Bay of Bengal stretching to the horizon. The water is calm and the air is pure, making it ideal for a post-ritual morning walk or peaceful family outing.

Uppada is also famous throughout India for its exquisite Uppada Jamdani silk sarees — a Geographical Indication (GI) tagged textile tradition that has been practiced here for over two centuries. The intricate zari work on these sarees is done entirely by hand by artisan families in the village. Visiting the weaver workshops is a rare cultural experience that complements the spiritual journey at Pithapuram.

Kakinada Beach & Hope Island

Kakinada Beach, situated approximately 25 kilometres from Pithapuram, is a lively coastal destination along the Bay of Bengal known for its scenic promenade, active fishing harbour, and the famous Hope Island — a unique sand spit visible offshore that creates a dramatic natural panorama. The beach is particularly beautiful in the early morning and at sunset, when the fishing boats set off or return with their catch.

Kakinada is also famous for its fresh seafood — though given the sattvic nature of the Pithapuram pilgrimage, vegetarian visitors will find excellent pure vegetarian restaurants and sweet shops along the beach road. The iconic Kakinada Kaja (a traditional sweet) and the Kakinada Halwa are must-try specialties. The Uppada Jamdani silk outlet stores in Kakinada are also worth visiting if you missed the weavers' workshops at Uppada.

Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary — India's Second Largest Mangroves

The Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary, located approximately 35 kilometres from Pithapuram near Kakinada, is one of India's most ecologically significant natural reserves. Covering over 235 square kilometres, it contains the second-largest mangrove forest in India, an extraordinary ecosystem that supports an astonishing diversity of wildlife. The sanctuary sits at the mouth of the Godavari River, where its distributaries meet the Bay of Bengal — a confluence of tremendous natural and spiritual significance.

The mangrove channels at Coringa are best explored by boat. The forest service runs guided boat safaris that take you deep into the dense green labyrinth of mangrove roots, where you can observe over 120 bird species including the rare white-backed vulture, grey pelican, painted stork, sea eagle, and numerous species of kingfisher and heron. The estuarine crocodile (mugger) is also found here and is occasionally spotted on the banks. The sanctuary is also home to the critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphin, which can sometimes be glimpsed in the deeper channels.

Early morning visits (5:30–8:00 AM) offer the richest wildlife experience as birds are most active at this time. The forest department office at Coringa issues entry permits and boat hire, which should be arranged in advance during peak birding season (November to February). Our sightseeing packages include all these logistics, so you simply arrive and enjoy.

Tips for Planning Your Sightseeing Day

  • Combine your sightseeing with a ritual day: complete Tarpanam at Pada Gaya Sarovar in the early morning (5:30–7:00 AM), then depart for sightseeing by 8:00 AM.
  • All three destinations (Uppada, Kakinada, Coringa) can be covered in a single well-planned day tour of 8–10 hours.
  • October to February is the ideal season — comfortable temperatures (22–30°C), calm seas, and peak birding at Coringa.
  • Carry a light cotton shawl or dupatta for temple visits on the way; sarees are not required for beach/wildlife visits.
  • Cash is recommended for beachside stalls, boat hire at Coringa, and silk purchases at Uppada — UPI acceptance is limited at these locations.
  • Our tour vehicles are fully AC and include a driver-guide who is familiar with all three destinations.
